Most of the time and effort was put into the digital editing and coloring step.

Sometimes, I see a photo of an old friend and just get inspired enough to use it as a drawing reference. In case you're wondering, in RL he's an electrician. He might not know anything about the members of Iteration X from White Wolf's old Mage: the Ascension rpg setting, but I'm gleefully awaiting to hear how many items in this drawing he recognizes as being heavily based on RL electricians' gear. LOL

Also, I liked the composition of my previous drawing of a Void Engineer from the same rpg setting, and it dawned on me that I should depict various characters in different drawings, each with an identical composition, perspective, and general color scheme.

I'm happy with how, just as the previous picture, there are multiple layers for multiple audiences. A person who isn't an artist and knows nothing of Mage's Technocracy can still appreciate the drawing on one level. Second, any total stranger who happens to be a lifelong fan of the Mage's Technocracy will catch several hidden references to the setting. Third, I've got hidden references to the RL person within the drawing, including his facial features and tools/gear/clothing which would only be familiar to people in his RL profession. The three layers aren't dependent on each other for the audience's understanding, but they can deepen the backstory more than any of the three layers would reveal by themselves.
