Description

10-4-2017 Minor edit: I added gray color back into of coat to better fit into the visual cohesion of the other drawings in this series. Also, I wanted this drawings' title to better fit the tone of the other drawings' titles in this series.

After much experimentation with different backgrounds, here it is. I decided not to use the background where I had lots of smoky skulls, hands, claws, and demonic faces because frankly, it seemed too derivative.
The non-background version is still visible at Void Engineer Illustration by PuppetcancerI like both versions equally. (The face and head used a photo of actor Aaron Lustig as a reference.)

The idea behind the palmprints is from a dream I had years ago. (During that time in my actual life, I had been drawing a lot of pictures of Harrier and minimalist shadow ninjas.) This dream was very short. It featured an ordinary white wall inside a house where my dream-self (as Harrier) was investigating something. Shadowy handprints began to appear one-by-one upon a bare wall, eventually superimposing over one another upon the wall.

Also in this dream, although it wasn't explicitly said or shown, it was just known that when enough of the hands appeared over the same part of the wall, that spot would become darker and would eventually become an open rift between dimensions. Then those unseen, hostile beings making the disembodied handprints from the other dimension could enter our world.

Coolest of all was that in the dream, the weakening of the barrier between worlds was not accompanied by any sound nor music. I always liked that dream, and today was the day I finally have a place to put that imagery.

Note: my thanks to MandiPope and MadameLibra for their suggestions involving backgrounds. Generally, I don't DO backgrounds, but this particular picture deserved a suitable background.

My thanks back atcha for asking for my thoughts.  You don't know how awesome it is when your favorite artist asks you for your opinion.  That's damned humbling.

That said, I love this.  It's creepy.  Whose handprints are those?  Why does it look like they were banging up against a once clean glass surface, now marred up with the prints?  That look like they were muddy or dusty, covered in some kind of ick before they smacked this glass or see through surface.  It writes its own story to the viewer and formulates a bunch of questions that don't have immediate answers; you need to engage with the character and the character's backstory in order to understand what those handprints are doing there...  and maybe more disconcerting than WHY they are there, is WHO put them there in the first place?  ....  or maybe even WHAT?

Nice background.  You're like me in that I don't do backgrounds very often, but I should.  I like both of your versions, with AND without the background, but for Al, a lack of background seems to work as well as it does with one.  I don't know why that is, but even with no background to it, the piece doesn't look like it's lacking anything.
