So?

One of the most relaxing and mentally healthy moments I get are those rare times when I read about the latest digitally-manufactured outrage of the week, and my reaction is, "So?"

ex. In live in a part of the U.S. where city and countryside flip back and forth pretty easily. Whenever I hear about somebody shooting a coyote on their farm, I don't have much of an urge to leap up and protest about cruelty to animals. If it's on your property and biting your chickens, your pets, or your kids, you get to blow that animal away, guilt-free, with no charges being pressed.

Yet, I have the impression that some people online would think I was a heartless Nazi. Yes, if I was shooting at the neighbor's Jewish kids, I would indeed be a bad man. I don't currently own a gun, but I get it that any farmer who lives half-a-mile from me would want to shoot any animal which was snacking in the chicken coop; that farmer has the same reasons that a grocery store manager would call the cops on a shoplifter. Watching your paycheck get eaten by a thief is NOT acceptable.

I wonder if how many other instances there are where the most civil and kind thing we can do is to look at something controversial, shrug our shoulders, and say, "So?"

(Truth be told, I've always had that "So?" attitude about abortion. It's not that I don't grasp the arguments on either side; it's that I'm never going to get pregnant. In contrast, I DO hold some strong opinions in favor of physician-assisted suicide, because I've had cancer, I'm not getting any younger, and I hate the thought of people being forced to "live" as a perpetual invalid when they're elderly.)
